John saw him, nodded, and then winced at something his Mom said, comically holding the phone away from his ear to peer at the handset dubiously, before returning it gingerly to his ear.
"...No, Mom, that's just the housemate. Yeah, I told you, it was - Bobby. Yeah, it's a small world."
Absently he held a hand up to Bobby, a clear 'stop/no talking' sign, trying to keep him away as much as he wanted him close right now.
Glancing at his boyfriend, John turned away from the door to hide his expression and spoke a little lower into the phone: "No, I'm not - I never - there was no gushing, okay?"
His expression got a little more sour and pursed at what his Mom said in reply. "Well, can I talk to Katie? No? Okay then, I'll just message my own sister on Facebook then! G'bye, Mom," John declared, and pressed 'end' one the call with a mutinous expression like he wanted to throw the handset into the wall before managing to place it into the receiver cradle.
Then he sighed, sinking back against the kitchen counter, face briefly in his hands. "God, that was awful," he declared, and removed his hands to manage a tired grin at Bobby. "Come and make me feel better?"
